In Kuwait, there are no rules or guidelines that determine who can be considered a psychologist. However, in many other countries, psychologists must have a doctoral degree in the field of psychology, a Psy.D. (Doctor of Psychology), or an Ed.D. (Doctor of Education).
In addition to a doctorate, a psychologist must also complete a specific number of hours of supervised training. Generally, this will involve two to three years working in clinics or hospitals before finishing the Ph.D., and at least one year of intense, full-time training after the degree is completed. In many countries, psychologists also have to pass licensing examinations, however this is not the case in Kuwait.
After graduating from university, it takes a minimum of five to six years to become a psychologist, and it can often take six to eight years. Most psychologists have produced a doctoral dissertation, an original, lengthy research paper which focuses on a topic within their field of study.

As psychotherapy is an individualized process, each person’s process will differ.
However, generally, most people attend the therapy session at least once a week, with each session lasting 50 minutes. For more intensive psychotherapy, you may choose to see your therapist more often. Some patients may see our therapists for brief therapy sessions, usually about six sessions, while others may require more sessions, depending on the intensity of the issue being treated.
Although it is normal to feel nervous before the first session, this feeling usually goes away in time. After the first or second session, the therapist will then be able to work on a comprehensive, individualized treatment plan; the treatment plan and goals are periodically revised to reflect the patient’s needs.
Psychotherapy does not involve any medication, although there are some patients who are already prescribed medications by other doctors. At FSHN, we are also able to assist patients by determining when medication may be needed, and accordingly refer patients to other professionals.

Psychoeducational testing, also referred to as “psychological testing”, “psychological assessment”, “psychological evaluation”, “LD testing”, “psychological battery”, “IQ/achievement testing”), is an in-depth individualized assessment of a student's cognitive and academic strengths and weaknesses. Psychoeducational testing is helpful in developing a description of how a student learns, identifying areas that might need support, and diagnosing any possible learning disabilities or other conditions that may require special educational interventions. Psychoeducational testing is also helpful in identifying gifted and talented students.
With psychoeducational assessments, we can work with the child’s school or university to help implement the proper treatment and educational plan. All assessments are focused on interventions and offering concrete recommendations, seeking to improve the issue and build on the child’s existing strengths.
If your child seems to be underachieving in school, chronically struggling in a certain academic area, showing very inconsistent progress across academic areas, or if you or teachers suspect that your child has a unique style of learning which presents challenges, then psychoeducational testing may be helpful.
The first step in a complete psychoeducational evaluation is an interview with the parents to develop a comprehensive and detailed description of the concerns. Often, school records, consultation with teachers, and classroom observations are used to help determine what tests, if any, can be used to help address any questions and concerns.
The clinician will interview you regarding your child’s background, including: birth and development details, medical history, family history, and educational history. You will also be required to sign releases to obtain copies of past test results, medical reports and school records; a copy of the current report card and samples of your child’s academic work are also helpful to your clinician.
For a young child, inform them that they will meet with a psychologist/educational psychologist, who will engage with them in a fun, friendly manner by taking part in activities, such as drawing, playing games and puzzles.
For a young and/or anxious child, bringing their favorite toy or a photograph of family, friend or family pet during the visit can ease the transition and facilitate a productive session.
For an older child, particularly one who enjoys computers, inform them that he/she may be asked to engage in various fun, computer-related activities and other small tasks.

The psychoeducational evaluation provides our therapists with the necessary information about the child’s general intelligence, level of academic achievement, fine motor and visual motor integration, language, memory and daily skills. Results are compared to other children’s results to determine if treatment is required and in what form, in order to help your child succeed at school and at home.
Our fees are determined by the services required for treatment. As our services are based on individualized treatment plans, only after initial evaluation can we properly assess the problem or concern at hand, and accordingly provide more accurate costs of the services provided.
However, we at FSHN urge that fees not deter you from seeking our professional help. As a non-profit organization, with a clear mission of providing the highest quality services for the entire community, we are able to accommodate all income levels, and therefore never decline a client due to fees.
